There are fantastic opportunities for commercial surveyors. In his first blog post, Jasper Caudwell explains his career path up to now.

With the growth of our services – and our recent expansion into Nottingham – we are looking out for new talent to strengthen our commercial team. I have been at Pygott & Crone since 2011 but I actually first stepped through the door when I was just 14 years old; taking in a weeks work experience at our Sleaford branch, a stone’s throw away from St George’s Academy where I went to school.

I knew that estate agency was for me – and the commercial side in particular really took my interest. I returned for a second period of work experience whilst in the Sixth Form and once I completed my A-Levels I was offered a full-time job to join the residential sales team.

What I particularly enjoy about my role is the diversity – each day is different and I am able to work all over Lincolnshire on a variety of schemes. As a mixed practice, we deal with lots of different sectors – from retail and leisure to land acquisition and large-scale mixed-use developments. This variety enables me to stay motivated, I always want to achieve the best for my client and enjoy interacting with them on a daily basis. Finding a solution and making a scheme work is a really fantastic feeling and is definitely a highlight of commercial surveying.

My proudest achievement since joining Pygott & Crone has definitely been achieving a first class honours in 2016 from Sheffield Hallam University – a degree which was sponsored by Pygott & Crone. I’m looking forward to my future here, as the business expands further across the UK – with a variety of work coming through our recent appointment to the Scape Built Environment Consultant Services framework and through the opening of our Nottingham office – I hope to increase my specialisms and support further developments across the country.

With such fantastic new opportunities on the horizon, now really is the perfect time to be joining the property industry.

If any of this strikes a chord with you, here are my top tips on how to get into the property industry:

Get work experience – having prior knowledge before starting full-time work was invaluable and I would thoroughly recommend getting as much work experience as possible to get a good understanding of a business.

Ask questions – the commercial property industry is always changing, the market fluctuates and there is always something new to learn, so make sure you ask questions.

Have confidence – make yourself known to local agents by going into the office or speaking to agents on the phone; show that you are driven and have determination.

Take advice – those in the profession know what it takes to get to where you want to be so take their advice, you never know when it might come in useful!
